Description

These chili dogs are a backyard BBQ classic, topped with hearty chili and your favorite toppings like melted cheese, crunchy onions, and spicy jalapeños.

Ingredients

For the Chili:

  • 1 lb ground beef (I recommend 85% lean)
  • 1/2 white or yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup beef broth

For the Dogs:

  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns (toasted if desired)
  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese, diced red onion, sliced scallions, sliced jalapeno, yellow mustard

Instructions

For the chili:

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
  3. Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and broth. Stir to combine.
  4. Simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Add an extra splash of broth if it becomes too thick.

To make the chili dogs:

  1. Cook the hot dogs according to your preference.
  2. Place each hot dog in a bun and spoon a generous amount of warm chili on top.
  3. Add toppings of your choice, serve, and enjoy!
