Peeling and chopping an onion can sometimes feel like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be. We show you, step by step, the best method for chopping an onion for use in just about any recipe. See our video with Chef Gabe Alvarez and step by step photos below.
Step 1
Identify the top and the root ends of the onion.
Step 2
Slice off the top of the onion. Keep the root end in tact.
Step 3
Lay the onion on a cutting board with the root side up and slice vertically right through the root, creating 2 halves.
Step 4
You can now easily peel back the skin.
Step 5
Place the onion, flat side down, and make vertical cuts, about ยผ″ apart, but not all the way to the root of the onion. Keep the root end in tact by about ยฝ″.
Step 6
Now cut crossways to the previous cuts, and the diced pieces will fall away.
Complete!
Congratulations! You now have diced onion. Continue with other half if necessary, or seal in an air tight bag for later use.
