There’s only one thing better than a classic chocolate chip cookie: a giant 10-inch cookie made in a cast-iron skillet!
This giant chocolate chip skillet cookie has everything you love about a chocolate chip cookie: crispy golden edges, an ooey-gooey center, buttery sweet flavor, and melty chocolate chips. Whether you’re whipping it up for a special occasion or just because, this dessert is guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.
This is an easy and straightforward recipe, perfect for amateur bakers!
Ingredients & Equipment
In my opinion, one of the most important ingredients for a great chocolate chip cookie is unsalted butter. The butter gives the cookie a lot of flavor and wonderful texture. You will need to melt your butter, which you can easily do using the microwave for about 1 minute.
We’ll be using a combination of brown sugar and granulated sugar. Using a combination of both sugars will give the cookie a rich flavor and chewy texture. Dark brown sugar and light brown sugar will both work well. We will also use vanilla extract to give the cookie additional flavor.
Next you’ll need an egg and an egg yolk. I know it can be annoying to separate an egg, but the egg yolk adds moisture and a creamy texture to the cookie dough. I promise, it’s worth it!
For dry ingredients, we’ll be using flour, baking soda, and salt. And finally you’ll need chocolate chips! You can use whatever type of chocolate you prefer here – dark, semi-sweet, and milk chocolate all work great. My personal favorite is milk chocolate. If you don’t have chocolate chips you can also use a chopped up chocolate bar.
We’ll bake the cookie in a 10-inch cast iron skillet. 10-inch is pretty much the standard size that most people have. If your skillet is 12 inches, that will work too, but the cookie will be a little thinner and cook in slightly less time.
Preparation
This cookie dough is super simple and comes together in just 15 minutes! Start by preheating your oven to 350℉ and greasing your skillet with cooking spray or butter.
Next you’re going to mix the dry ingredients. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt to a bowl and whisk them to combine. Set the bowl aside while you work on the wet ingredients.
In another bowl, mix the melted butter and sugar. Don’t worry if the butter and sugar look separated at this point, they will come together in the next step!
Next you’re going to mix the egg, egg yolk and vanilla into the sugar mixture. At this point the mixture should look nice and creamy and the ingredients should be well-combined.
Now add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and carefully fold until they just start to come together into a dough. Be careful not to overmix. The more you mix the flour, the tougher and chewier the cookie will become.
And now for the best part – time to add the chocolate chips! Pour in the chocolate chips and gently fold them into the dough until they are evenly distributed.
Cooking
Transfer your dough to the greased skillet and spread it into an even layer. This dough is slightly thinner than a regular chocolate chip cookie dough so it should be easily spreadable.
You can also add some additional chocolate chips to the top if you’d like.
Now pop that skillet in the oven and bake it for 23-28 minutes. It is best to bake your cookie on the middle rack of your oven – this allows it to get crispy on the bottom and golden on the top. When the cookie is done, the edges should be golden brown and it should be set in the middle. Use a toothpick to test the middle. The toothpick should come out clean.
Let the cookie cool for about 10 minutes before digging in. I promise it will be worth the wait!
Serving & Storage
Slice the cookie into individual servings and serve it warm with vanilla ice cream on top. If you have leftover cookie slices (though I doubt you will), they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. No need to reheat the leftovers before enjoying them. They are still delicious at room temperature, the texture will just be a bit more firm.
Make this recipe your own!
One reason why I love this recipe is because it is so customizable! You can make it your own with your favorite mix-ins and toppings. Some of my favorite things to mix into the dough are white chocolate chips, pretzel pieces, chopped nuts, and mini marshmallows.
Another way to take your cookie to the next level is by sprinkling some flaky sea salt on it once it comes out of the oven. Salt enhances the cookie’s sweet and chocolatey flavors and makes it even more delicious!

Getting ready to make and take to football party! I made this and my small family loved the crispness on the outside side and goodness in the middle when we ate while still warm. The flavor is definitely like eating delicious chocolate chip cookies without scooping and waiting to bake in batches!
