Why These Are the Best Buttermilk Pancakes

You can only go so far with store-bought pancake mix. For truly amazing pancakes, it’s worth taking the time to make them from scratch. But to achieve pancake perfection, you’ve gotta ditch the regular milk and use buttermilk!

This buttermilk pancake recipe is a great example of how sometimes, sticking to the classic version is the best way to go. Real buttermilk has a tangy flavor that creates a rich, fluffy texture in pancakes. It doesn’t come out too dense or sweet, just stacked high with delicious flavor.

    Ingredients for Buttermilk Pancakes

    • All-purpose flour: AP flour is necessary to create the perfect pancake texture.
    • Granulated sugar: Just a little is all you need to achieve the perfect balance of sweetness.
    • Baking powder & soda: To get these homemade pancakes to rise and be nice and fluffy, we need a little bit of baking powder and soda.
    • Salt: A sprinkle of salt in the buttermilk pancake batter helps to bring out the flavors.
    • Egg: This helps to bind the ingredients together and create a fluffy texture.
    • Buttermilk: The key to making the best pancakes! It adds great flavor and makes them super fluffy.
    • Vanilla extract: A splash of vanilla extract adds depth of flavor to the pancakes.
    • Butter: You’ll need melted butter for the batter and a tablespoon to grease the pan.
    • Mixed berries: Add these on top for a burst of color and freshness.
    • Maple syrup: What even are the perfect pancakes without some maple syrup?

    • Chocolate chips
    • Nutella
    • Peanut butter
    • Sliced bananas
    • Cinnamon and sugar

    Pro Tip

Don’t overmix the batter! A few small lumps are okay and will make for fluffier pancakes.

Once mixed, let the batter rest for 5 minutes before cooking.

    Cooking

Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and lightly grease with butter.

Pour ¼ cup of batter per pancake and cook for 2-3 minutes until bubbles form on the surface. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
