Ingredients for slow cooker turkey and sweet potato chili.

    Ingredients

    • Chicken stock: For that essential liquid base.
    • Beans: You’ll need a can of white beans, black beans, and kidney beans.
    • Ground turkey: I used lean ground turkey for this recipe, but you could also use ground beef if you have it!
    • Sweet potato: Gives it a hint of sweetness and a hearty texture.
    • Garlic & onion: Can’t have chili without these flavor builders!
    • Bell peppers: Gives the chili some color and a bit of crunch.
    • Tomato: Fresh tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste all add layers of flavor.
    • Spice blend: You’ll need a mix of cumin, chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to deliver that rich flavor.
    • Oil: I use olive oil here, but any oil will do the trick.

    Topping Suggestions

    • Green onion
    • Shredded cheese
    • Avocado slices
    • Sour cream/Greek yogurt
    • Fresh cilantro

How to Make Turkey and Sweet Potato Chili

    Step 1: Brown the Turkey

Alright, first things first: brown that ground turkey in a skillet. Once it’s all cooked through, drain off any excess fat and refrigerate until ready to add.

Step 2: Add Everything to the Slow Cooker

Next, add all the vegetables, beans, and spices to the slow cooker. Give it a good stir to get everything mixed.

Then, pour in the chicken stock, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Stir again until evenly distributed.

    Step 3: Slow Cook

Now, cover and let it cook! You’ll want to cook it on high for about 4 hours, or if you’ve got more time, set it to low for 7 hours. You’ll know it’s ready when those sweet potatoes are nice and tender.

    Step 4: Add the Turkey

Once it’s all cooked down, stir in that turkey you set aside and let it warm up for about 10-15 minutes before dishing it out.

    Step 5: Serve & Enjoy

Serve it up hot and garnish with your favorite toppings. I like to add a side of lime wedges and tortilla chips for a little extra crunch. Enjoy your delicious, hearty turkey sweet potato chili!
